Class G Amplifier Technology

The JBL SA550 Classic features an advanced amplifier design known as Class G. Unlike traditional amplifiers that use a single power supply, Class G employs multiple supplies for greater efficiency. The initial power supply provides enough energy for the amplifier to output 10 Watts per channel, which might seem modest.

Innovative Power Delivery

While 10 Watts may seem modest, the JBL SA550 Classic is capable of delivering much more power. It can provide a maximum sustained output of 150 Watts per channel, thanks to a secondary, high-voltage power supply. Here's where the SA550's amplification design gets particularly clever. If this second power supply were simply switched in when needed, it could introduce significant distortion, particularly harmonic distortion, which would be unpleasant.
